Why Old Major is Wrong

May 1, 2017

The character of Old Major in the story Animal Farm denies truths about the nature of evil when he says all men are the enemy and claims that man’s removal will abolish the root cause of suffering. Old Major’s belief is wrong for several reasons. First, even if Old Major sees one man as evil, it does not mean that all men are evil. Old Major has probably never met other men besides the people who live and work on Animal Farm, Pinchfield, and Foxwood.  Furthermore, even if these people really were evil, Old Major does not realize that men have the choice to be good or evil, and are good unless they choose not to be. Second, Old Major says that if men are removed from the world, it will abolish the root cause of suffering. Old Major is not thinking this statement through. He may see farmer Jones as a cause of suffering, but as the other animals later learn when Jones is expelled from the farm, there are other causes of suffering besides men. For example, harsh weather, Boxer’s sickness, and starvation were also causes of suffering on the farm.  Finally, Old Major is also wrong because he states that man is the only real enemy.  After Napoleon’s dogs chase him away, Napoleon blames Snowball for everything that goes wrong on the farm, for example, the windmill being destroyed. This proves that man is not the only real enemy. For these three reasons, the character Old Major in Animal Farm is incorrect.
