It was a cold summer night, for the air conditioner was blowing full
blast, making it impossible to hear sounds around it. There was an
eerie light from the bathroom that shone on the blackness of the room.
No one was there but the innocent New Zealand White Rabbit, Jameson
Taillon, sleeping peacefully in his apparently locked and secure cage.
The bed was opposite the cage. The two somewhat large windows, now
covered in small beige curtains, were casting an inconspicuous ominous
glow to parts of the cluttered room. The rabbit clucked his teeth
comfortably. His cozy cage was a refuge from the outside world, now
dark. Very dark. Two large and shedding cats pushed open the door
softly. They sat a ways from the rabbit, who was undisturbed by the
entrance of the two animals. They would be the only witnesses to the
horrible crime which was about to happen that night, for in the other
room the faint sound of the grandfather clock had already struck
twelve.
Slowly and quietly the door from the hallway opened. The creature from
the other room had awakened. Not yet twelve weeks old, this animal was
enormous. His legs and paws were dipped in white. His body was tiger
striped. And his head was black as the night from which he had
come. He licked his chops. He had not eaten dinner that night and the
hunger burned and bit inside him. He blundered into the room; his blue
eyes gleamed. Jameson blinked awake. He had heard of this creature who
ate anything in sight. The two cats who had entered earlier did not
move. The fur on their backs stood on end. A large pile of hair had
fallen off them and lay around them. The rabbit stared on. The animal
slunk down on his stomach and watched the petrified rabbit stare back.
Sam (for they called him that) stuck his black cold nose up to the
bars. The rabbit ran to the back of his cage; he uttered a growl– the
best a rabbit could do. It was not enough and the animal came nearer.
Nearer. Nearer, until his muzzle jammed up against the lock. The lock
slipped open. The door to the cage creaked to a halt. Its hinges were
rusted from the rabbit spilling water on them. This was the moment the
cats had waited for. They looked on with anticipation, waiting for the
wretched scene which was about to occur! The animal pounced in the
cage! The rabbit counterattacked, making strange noises and flailing
its claws in the pup’s face. The pup jumped back. His head tilted to
one side. He made a side approach this time but the rabbit stayed
firm. The cats stared. Suddenly the door burst open. Reinforcement had
arrived. The mean scary animal suddenly changed into a scared puppy
once more. He wagged his tail back and forth, looking with big blue
innocent eyes, hoping for the best. The cats slunk out of the room.
They left a trail of fur behind them. The rabbit, still scared, inched
his way forward. The pup dared not look at his blazing red eyes. The
pup was taken away and put back to bed. Jameson Taillon returned to
sleeping. The cats went back to whatever weird things cats do at
night. The bathroom light went out. Everything went back to normal,
but none of the witnesses that looked on at the scene of the crime
ever forgot what happened and always wondered what things he would do
when he was older.
