Pope Sylvester, Patron Saint of the New Year

January 1, 2017

Pope Sylvester was made pope in the year 314 during the reign of Emperor Constantine, who he may have baptized according to legend. This was also at the time of the Donastist Schism and the Arian heresy, against which Pope Sylvester defended the church in the Council of Nicaea. Because he died on the 31st of December, people ask for his intercession for a happy new year.

Lord, help and sustain your people
by the prayers of Pope Sylvester.
Guide us always in this present life
and bring us to the joy that never ends
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son,
Who lives and reigns with You
in the unity of the Holy Spirit
One God, forever and ever,
Amen.
